Ogawa Coffee, Kyoto Sanjo

Ogawa Coffee, Kyoto Sanjo, Fuji Superia X-tra 400

We liked this little coffee shop – for its location on the corner of Kiya-machi Dori and Sanjo Dori and the relaxed unpretentious atmosphere.

Despite being a big chain with numerous branches dotted around the country (with a higher concentration in the Kansai region) Ogawa Coffee retains a certain charm. Staff were friendly and professional.

We opted for one of the desert sets and a latte. The coffee was ok but unremarkable as was the desert but there was nothing to complain about.

A perfect spot for some people watching or catching up with fiends, or, as in our case, ducking out of the rain for half an hour.

The Edge of Higashiyama

Our first full day in Kyoto. We stayed literally on the edge of Higashiyama – where the Kamo River intersects Sanjo Dori in a tiny flat about 5 mins from Sanjo Station. This is entirely insignificant fact gave me the idea for the amazingly inventive title. It was very cool area to stay in anyway.

These pitchas were taken on and around Sanjō Ōhashi, one of many bridges that spans the Kamo River. The friendly peoples busting some shapes for me on the banks of the river in the last photo appeared to be practising flash-mobbing.

Train to Kyoto – Ferrania Solaris 100

After five fun-filled and frolicsome days in Tokyo we got on the choo choo train (shinkansen) to Kyoto. The sky was overcast so we didn’t get a view of Mount Fuji. The coffee in the pitcha was terrible. Just terrible. I’m going to call it ‘train coffee’. I still drank it though. The little breaded pork sarnie was ok.

If you have a JR pass you can get the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto – all services except for the Nozomi service. We got the Hikari service from Tokyo station. Very easy.

Yanesen – Ferrania Solaris 100

Yanesen (Yanaka, Nezu and Sendagi)

We strolled from Nippori Station past the cemetery and towards Yanaka Ginza which we thought was a bit of a tourist trap. We sampled some of the street food on offer which was ok.

We turned left at the end of Yanaka Ginza a stopped at Yanesen AZ Cafe which we though was very nice. Despite the coffee not being particularly great and the cake being a bit stale we enjoyed ourselves here. The staff were nice and it was comfortable.

After Nezu Shrine we wandered back to the station via some of the back streets where we found some little cafes, bars and restaurants. I shot a roll of film at this point but we suffered a camera malfunction. A bit disappointing as we had some nice light – it was during golden hour.

We liked this area and we decided we’ll definitely explore it further when we return to Japan.

We stopped for Ramen in Takadanobaba on our way home because we liked the sound of “Takadanobaba”.
