Our Kanchanaburi trip started at Thonburi railway station. The station is actually the old Bangkok Noi station as the old Thonburi station was given to Mahidol University a few years ago. The Ordinary trains 257 and 259 terminate at Nam Tok.

The trip is classed as a “tourist train” which means the SRT charge tourists B100 for any journey on it regardless of the length. It’s not cool but, whatever, it’s still a snip and a nice journey and if you’ve ever visited a national park or a historical monument in Thailand you’ll know it’s not the only way the Thai Government shamefully rinse tourists. I wouldn’t recommend the journey in March.

Mido Cafe – Fuji Reala

Mido Cafe, Hong Kong.

This week I visited Mido Cafe in Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon, a well know cha chan teng or tea restaurant. It’s famous for being one of the first, if not the first restaurant of it’s kind in Hong Kong having opened it’s doors in 1950.

Mido Cafe is a charming little place having hardly changed at all since then. The decor, chairs and tables and even the till are all original. It’s a bit of a cliche, but it really does feel like you’re stepping back in time. It really is straight out of a Wong Kar Wai movie.

Mido is on two floors with the main eating area on the first floor. There are huge windows that allow lots of natural light to fill the cafe creating a lovely atmosphere. It’s in the end building of a row so there are windows all the way around which makes it good for firing off a few frames with your Mamiya C220.

We had some old Mido favourites; sweet and sour pork ribs and french toast.

Phu Chi Fa

Phu Chi Fa [????????]

I haven’t uploaded many pics from my travels. This was taken in 2005 on my second backpacking trip. I travelled light (50ltr backpack) so I only carried a small SLR and one lens and after that was stolen a digital compact. I went through a few cameras as a dropped them or managed to smash them up in some way or another or they just got stolen or were dropped out of the back of tuk-tuks. I bought this Sony DSC-N1 after my Canon EOS was stolen in Vietnam and my first ever digital camera, a DSC-T7 was stolen in Thailand, although not before I broke it by sweating on it too much on a trek.

Phu Chi Fa is a mountain in the Thai Highlands in the Phi Pan Nam Range in the eastern part of Chiang Rai Province. It’s a bit of a bugger to get to – I rode a motorbike there – I think it took about 2 hrs from Chiang Rai city centre.

I ended up going there twice but on this trip I went from Phu Chi Fa to Chiang Khong and from there to Chiang Saen and from there to Mai Sai where I thought I may as well go across to Myanmar to get my visa stamped again and from there back to Chiang Rai.

The young lady in the second picture is my dear friend, Lin. I met Lin in Chiang Rai but she’s from a very small village way up in the hills near Ban Therd Thai, the enclave used as a hideout by the infamous drug lord, Khun Sa. Lin is from the Loimi Akha tribe. On another trip we visited her village and I met her family.
