Mido Cafe, Hong Kong.
This was taken in Mido Cafe in Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon, a well know cha chan teng or tea restaurant. It’s famous for being one of the first, if not the first restaurant of it’s kind in Hong Kong having opened it’s doors in 1950.
What makes Mido so charming is that it has hardly changed at all since then. The decor, chairs and tables and even the till are all original. It’s a bit of a cliche, but it really does feel like you’re stepping back in time, or, for me, walking onto the set of a Wong Kar Wai movie.
Mido is on two floors and the thing I like best about it is the huge windows that allow lots of natural light to fill the second floor of the cafe. It’s in the end building of a row so there are windows all the way around which makes it good for firing off a few frames with your Mamiya C220.
We had some old Mido favourites; sweet and sour pork ribs and french toast.
