This week I visited Mido Cafe in Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon, a well know cha chan teng or tea restaurant. It’s famous for being one of the first, if not the first restaurant of it’s kind in Hong Kong having opened it’s doors in 1950.

Mido Cafe is a charming little place having hardly changed at all since then. The decor, chairs and tables and even the till are all original. It’s a bit of a cliche, but it really does feel like you’re stepping back in time. It really is straight out of a Wong Kar Wai movie.

Mido is on two floors with the main eating area on the first floor. There are huge windows that allow lots of natural light to fill the cafe creating a lovely atmosphere. It’s in the end building of a row so there are windows all the way around which makes it good for firing off a few frames with your Mamiya C220.

We had some old Mido favourites; sweet and sour pork ribs and french toast.
