Restaurant, Kyoto Sanjo

I can’t remember the name of this restaurant or exactly where it was but I think it was on Kiya-machi Dori. Near this restaurant.

We liked it here and I was utterly charmed by our waitress who was of advanced years, well into her eighties by my estimation. Sadly, only one of Japan’s many poor lagers on draught.

We liked this little coffee shop – for its location on the corner of Kiya-machi Dori and Sanjo Dori and the relaxed unpretentious atmosphere.

Despite being a big chain with numerous branches dotted around the country (with a higher concentration in the Kansai region) Ogawa Coffee retains a certain charm. Staff were friendly and professional.

We opted for one of the desert sets and a latte. The coffee was ok but unremarkable as was the desert but there was nothing to complain about.

A perfect spot for some people watching or catching up with fiends, or, as in our case, ducking out of the rain for half an hour.

Yanesen – Ferrania Solaris 100

Yanesen (Yanaka, Nezu and Sendagi)

We strolled from Nippori Station past the cemetery and towards Yanaka Ginza which we thought was a bit of a tourist trap. We sampled some of the street food on offer which was ok.

We turned left at the end of Yanaka Ginza a stopped at Yanesen AZ Cafe which we though was very nice. Despite the coffee not being particularly great and the cake being a bit stale we enjoyed ourselves here. The staff were nice and it was comfortable.

After Nezu Shrine we wandered back to the station via some of the back streets where we found some little cafes, bars and restaurants. I shot a roll of film at this point but we suffered a camera malfunction. A bit disappointing as we had some nice light – it was during golden hour.

We liked this area and we decided we’ll definitely explore it further when we return to Japan.

We stopped for Ramen in Takadanobaba on our way home because we liked the sound of “Takadanobaba”.
